Lonely in Dubai: what actually helps
Feeling lonely in Dubai is common, and it is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It usually eases with routine rather than with one big event: one regular activity, one person you see again, one plan you suggest yourself. Below: why it happens here, what helps this week, and when to ask for more help.

Why loneliness is common here
Dubai is a city of arrivals. Most people came from somewhere else, many alone, and the people around you are often busy building their own lives. A few things make it harder:
- Your old network is far away. Friends and family are in other time zones, and calls do not replace seeing someone.
- People come and go. Friends move on to another job or country, and you start again more often than elsewhere.
- Work takes a lot of room. Long weeks leave little energy for meeting people.
- Summer moves life indoors. From roughly June to September, the heat makes spontaneous meetings rarer.
Knowing this helps: it is the situation, not you.
Small steps that help this week
- Pick one regular activity. A weekly class, a run club, a sport, a volunteering shift. Same place, same time, same faces.
- Say yes to one invitation. Even a short one. You can leave early; going matters more than staying.
- Suggest one simple plan. A coffee after the activity, a walk, a game. Most people are waiting for someone else to propose.
- Keep in touch with home, on a rhythm. A fixed call each week keeps those ties without filling every evening.
- Get out of the flat every day. A café, a library, a park in the cooler hours: being around people helps, even before you talk to them.

Places where conversations start easily
Some settings make talking natural because everyone is there for the same thing:
- Group sport: padel, running, football, climbing, beach volleyball.
- Classes and workshops: languages, cooking, art, dance.
- Volunteering: people who care about the same cause, and a task to share.
- Communities of your country or language: a familiar starting point, then mixed groups to widen your circle.
- Coworking spaces and professional meetups: if you work alone, they give your week colleagues.
When to talk to someone
Loneliness can weigh on your mood, sleep and energy. If it lasts, if you feel low most days, or if daily life becomes hard, talk to a doctor or a mental health professional: it is a normal step, and many clinics in Dubai offer consultations in several languages. Your employer’s health insurance may cover part of it; check your policy.
If you are in danger or think about harming yourself, call the emergency services: 999 (police) or 998 (ambulance) in the UAE.
Where IRLY fits in
IRLY is built to turn “I don’t know anyone” into a plan: join communities around what you like, find an activity this week or create your own, and talk with the group before you meet. IRLY Girl offers spaces for women only. It is one option among others; the regular activity and the plan you suggest are what change things.
